The project aims to enhance one of Australia's most iconic destinations while prioritising sustainability, cultural heritage and community outcomes.

Construction of the visitor experience centre is providing employment for the equivalent of up to 90 full-time positions and up to 50 ongoing jobs upon opening.

The coastal and hinterland building is taking shape, with precast concrete and steel structure nearing completion.

A 12 Apostles precinct redevelopment project team spokesperson said the works on the northern wing will continue until the end of 2025.

“Installation of rammed earth wall has commenced and will continue for the coming months,” the spokesperson said.

“The pedestrian-accessible roof structure is nearing completion and will reach its highest point in August.

“Installation of the roof structure on the central and northern buildings will continue into 2026.

“Internal fit-out of the visitor centre is proposed to commence later in 2025 and will continue until completion in late 2026.”

In the coming months, changed traffic conditions in the area will remain in place and residents can expect to see large vehicle movement in and around the precinct and surrounding suburbs.

The spokesperson also addressed the management of rainfall and stormwater drainage.

“As the local community knows, there has been heavy rainfall across the region recently,” the spokesperson said.

“This has sent increased stormwater run-off into existing stormwater drainage systems, including areas surrounding the 12 Apostles.

“At the 12 Apostles redevelopment site, stormwater run-off is managed by Kane Constructions, which is engaged by Development Victoria according to approved Stormwater Management plans.

“This includes filtration of stormwater being discharged into the local drainage system via the approved legal point of discharge.

“The protection, and celebration, of this special coastal environment is a priority for the project and an essential part of what will make it a world-class facility once completed.”

Gibson Steps has also been closed due to the effect of recent rainfall.

“Multiple agencies are working together to complete technical investigations at Gibson Steps,” the spokesperson said.

“The effect of recent rainfall, and the volume of stormwater entering the drainage system, are some of many factors being considered as part of the ongoing assessments.

“Gibson Steps will remain temporarily closed until technical assessments and any mitigation measures required are complete to ensure it can be reopened safely.

“All agencies appreciate the community's patience as we do this work to ensure everyone is safe.”
