Tigers celebrate 133 point win
WOORNDOO/Mortlake made it two massive wins in a row with a 133 point win over Moyston/Willaura in the round 10 Mininera and District senior football match on Saturday.
Despite a slow start against the bottom-placed Pumas, Woorndoo/Mortlake kicked into gear to run out 26.14.170 to 4.13.37 winners at the Moyston Recreation Reserve.
“It was a strong win in the end, but I had to be a bit stern at quarter time, not berating them, but gave them a bit of a shake-up, they started like they were half asleep,” Woorndoo/Mortlake coach Tom Ludeman said.
“But I think that’s what happens when you come off a big win and then play a team that’s also down the bottom, it’s a bit of a trap sometimes but we responded well after that.”
The Tigers handed a senior debut to junior player Kai Crawley, who lined up alongside his father Chris.
“It was pretty special, you don’t see that much anymore, a father and son playing together at senior level.
“Kai did really well, I didn’t know if he was quite ready, but he did exactly what he had to do.”
The goals were well spread out among the Woorndoo/Mortlake team.
Key forward Zac Lubeek, veteran Wayne Loader and Matt Pemberton all kicked four each, Jordan Buckley and Lochie Gunning kicked three each with Damien Pemberton, James Coghlan West and Keilan Webster-Bamford kicking two each.
Damien Pemberton was the Tigers best in the win.
“Pembo was good, he hit the scoreboard and had a strong game.
“He’s had a handful of weeks off with his shoulder and came back and cracked in hard straight away, it was good to see him doing that.”
Others in the best for the Tigers were Keilan Webster-Bamford, Lochie Gunning, Damien McCorkell, Matthew Pemberton and Jordan Buckley.
Woorndoo/Mortlake go into the mid-season break in second place with nine wins and one loss.
Next up for the Tigers is a home match at the DC Farran Oval against Penshurst on July 11.
The reserves match also saw Woorndoo/Mortlake score a thumping win, 24.17.161 to 1.3.9.
Nelson Anders, Hugo Stockman and Harry Lienert were the Tigers best, with Anders bagging seven goals, Stockman five and Tyne Anderson three.
The under 17 game saw Woorndoo/Mortlake get its first points of the season with a 5.6.36 to 4.3.27 win.
Best for the under 17 Tigers were Charlie Manderson, Elijah Bradbury, Archie Leishman, Zachary Dolling, Bailey Fox and Mason Dale.
Charlie Manderson, Kai Crawley, William Cameron, Matthew Pilcher and Sam Mahncke all kicked a goal each in the win.
The under 13 football saw Moyston/Willaura score a 4.2.26 to 1.5.11 win.
Best for the junior Tigers were Zac Beaton, Sam McCorkell, Jack Liston, Oliver Harris, Mason Crawley and Archie Dale, with Nicholi Bourchier kicking the only goal.
The A grade netball saw Woorndoo/Mortlake have a strong 54-23 win.
Best for Woorndoo/Mortlake were Ash Spokes and Mia Richie, with Sarah Cameron shooting 39 goals, Spokes 10 and Rachel Eldridge five.
In B grade, Moyston/Willaura scored a 41-30 win.
Jaime Killen and Sarah Muir were Woorndoo/Mortlake’s best, with Kristy Crawley shooting 11 goals and Chloe Goldsworthy 10.
The C grade game saw Woorndoo/Mortlake register a 19-18 win.
Annalise Abbott and Kimberley Lubeek were best for Woorndoo/Mortlake, with Abbott shooting 11 goals and Olivia Schuuring eight.
Moyston/Willaura won the 17 and under netball 40-36.
Ava Wardlaw and Maddison Cameron were the Tigers best, with Ava Wardlaw shooting 19 goals and Indi Wardlaw 17.
Woorndoo/Mortlake scored a big 53-8 win in the 15 and under netball.
Natalie Krepp and Ivy Wardlaw were the Tigers best, with Krepp shooting 30 goals, Ashlee Killen 10 and Ivy Wardlaw nine.
The 13 and under game ended in a 31-3 win to Woorndoo/Mortlake.
Paige Maddock and Monique Clark were best for the junior Tigers, with Maddock shooting 15 goals and Charlotte Allen 12.
