The peaks are calling

CAN you reach the summit of the four mountains in the area in one day?

Are you ready: Residents are invited to take on the Four Peaks challenge this Sunday.
Are you ready: Residents are invited to take on the Four Peaks challenge this Sunday.

John Fallon, organiser of the annual Four Peaks Challenge, is inviting residents to lace up their hiking boots and test themselves to answer this questions.

This Sunday – Sunday, April 21 – will see people from Camperdown and beyond participate in the fifth annual Four Peaks Challenge event.

Mr Fallon said walkers will reach the peaks of Camperdown’s Mount Leura and Mount Sugarloaf, Derrinallum’s Mount Elephant, and Noorat’s Mount Noorat.

“The general idea is we all meet at about 9.30am at the base of Mount Leura, people will register for the day there, and everyone sets off at their own pace,” he said.

“You’ll walk up Mount Leura and across to Mount Sugarloaf, then come back down.

“Get into your car, then a half hour drive to Mount Elephant to do the same there. We’ll have lunch there; they have nice lunchrooms and toilets there.

“Then get in your car, go for another half-hour drive, have a rest, and do Mount Noorat. You’ve then achieved the challenge of Four Peaks.”

Mr Fallon said the challenge usually gets people from Melbourne, Ballarat, Warrnambool and Geelong into the region alongside eager locals.

“Many of them are members of bushwalking clubs, but also just general members of the public that like the idea of walking up the four mountains in on day,” he said.

“Most people finish before four in the afternoon, and you walk at your own pace.

“Some people do it quickly, some people go slow.

“Everyone’s welcome; there’s no limit on numbers.”

Mr Fallon said there was no charge to take on the challenge.

“They’re all free to visit, so it doesn’t cost anything,” he said.

“It’s just a way of promoting the local reserves, because all four are reserves now, they’re not on private property.

“They all have established walking tracks for people to use.”

Mr Fallon said those interested in taking on the Four Peaks Challenge are advised to dress for the weather and wear sturdy shoes.

Attendees are also advised to bring a day pack with morning tea, lunch, snacks, plenty to drink, sunscreen, camera and binoculars, as well as their own vehicle to commute between the peaks.
