Swans hold third going into bye

CARAMUT’S senior footballers registered a 49-point win over Wickliffe/Lake Bolac in round 10 of the Mininera and District senior football competition.

The Swans’ 14.9.93 to 6.8.44 win at the Lake Bolac Recreation Reserve was their eighth of the season.

“We started with five goals in the first quarter and we looked really potent in our ball movement, everything was really on song,” Caramut coach Scott Judd said.

“Momentum shifted a little bit in the second quarter and they equalised, but then in the second half we ran over them a little bit, we stuck to task and got the job done, it was a really good win in the end.”

Judd was impressed with the home team, who sit four points outside the top five, and their efforts in the match.

“Wickliffe/Lake Bolac’s top end talent is really good and they’ve had a lot of players go through their list, talking to their coach and a couple of their significant players, they’ve had 45 players go through their senior list already, so you do feel for them on that side of things.

“But they’re not far off in terms of being a finals unit as well, so they might annoy a few teams on the run home I reckon.”

Phil Chatfield and Ethan Jenkins were best for the Swans in the win.

“Phil and Ethan both rucked for us on the weekend, Ethan was our number one ruck, and Phil was the backup option with (first choice ruck) Dylan Burns missing the game, both of them follow up in the air and on the ground, they just gave us a presence at ground level.

“Not only did they do that, they also got their fair share of ball out to our runners and we used it quite well, they were right up there in the best because of how they go about it.”

Caramut had a senior debutant in the game in mid-season signing George Huf, who has transferred from Queenscliff.

“George is mates with a few of our Geelong boys and we’ve been able to get him in, he kicked a couple of goals on debut with this and showed a little bit of class as well.

“He’s got a nice leg on him and he’s very fit in terms of covering the ground; Lake Bolac’s ground is quite wide compared to ours and he gave us a little bit of a lift with that.”

The Swans had a good spread of goal kickers, with Matthew Rook and captain Charlie Farrer leading the way with three goals each.

Caramut heads into the mid-season break in third spot.

“It’s nice to get that little bit of reward for our effort, even though it’s equal third spot, to be able to see our team sitting in that position has been a long time coming for the club, so it’s nice for all the supporters and committee members to see that.

“But we’ve got a really tough run home so we’re really going to find out where we’re at after the break.”

Willem Douglas, Andrew Hearne and Jaxon Keay were best for the Swans reserves in the win, with Joe Douglas kicking three goals.
