The ‘Breakfast with the Mayor’ engagement program offered the opportunity for students to get up close and personal with Corangamite Shire mayor councillor Kate Makin.

Cr Makin said it was a pleasure to attend the school and have breakfast with the students of Camperdown College.

“The students get the real one-on-one discussions that we require at Corangamite Shire,” she said.

“It’s being able to see that we’re relatable and they can just come to me with anything.

“I think that’s really important for the youth of Corangamite to understand that I am just a human being.

“I’m just a normal person and I’m very approachable and I love hearing all the issues and wants and needs of Corangamite Shire residents because without them there is no Corangamite Shire.”

Students Gracie Pearce, Charlotte Bennett and Max Thompson said they enjoyed being able to ask Cr Makin questions and speak to her personally.

“It was really interactive and she listened to everyone’s voices,” Gracie said.

Charlotte agreed, noting Cr Makin was very open with the students.

“I loved how the mayor was ready to listen and had answers ready for us,” she said.

Max said he felt heard by Cr Makin during the breakfast.

“She really took on our feedback and listened to us and let us share our ideas,” he said.

Cr Makin said the questions from students were great and she was happy to answer them.

“They’re great questions, they’re questions that I get quite often such as why did I become mayor, why did I become a councillor, and what do I do every day?” she said.

“People don’t understand that, so me just getting that information back out to them is really important as well.”

The breakfast was prepared thanks to local Lions club members and Cr Makin said she was hopeful for another visit to the college later this year.
