Happy birthday, Milo: Frogs, rabbits, a jellyfish and a whale were among the costumes St Patrick’s Primary School students donned to mark Milo Monkey’s birthday last week.

Students were dressed in costumes based on characters from the Little Learners Love Literacy program for the day as part of the celebration, which marks the completion of all of stages one-to-four of the program.

Assistant principal Tarryn Delaney said the school had been leading the way in structured literacy teaching for five years and was partnering with La Trobe University and the FLARE team to continue the program.

“In the junior school the students use the phonics program Little Learners Love Literacy – which is a structured and engaging literacy program designed to help children learn to read, spell and write with confidence,” she said.

“Based on explicit phonics instruction and evidence-based practices, it introduces sounds and letters in a carefully sequenced way, making learning fun and achievable for all students.

“To celebrate learning all of the stage one-to-four sounds the students attended Milo’s birthday party.

“The students looked fabulous dressing up as the different characters in Little Learners Love Literacy.”

Celebrations included in-school treats such as birthday cake, balloons, hot chips for lunch and playing pass the parcel.

Ms Delaney said students also paid a visit to the Camperdown Kindergarten.

“The students ventured down to the Camperdown Kindergarten to read Milo’s Birthday Surprise with the kindergarten students,” she said.

“The St Patrick’s School children then showed their old teachers how much learning they have done this year by reading books to them.

“The day was a wonderful way to recognise the students’ hard work and progress, made possible by the dedicated Foundation staff who planned such a memorable and fun-filled celebration for Milo Monkey.”
