Seniors celebrate
CORANGAMITE Shire Council’s Positive Ageing, Access and Inclusion Team, together with the Community and Youth team, celebrated International Day of Friendship with an intergenerational Christmas in July last week.
Sixteen students from Skipton Primary School and 60 senior citizens gathered at the Skipton Golf and Bowls Club last Wednesday to share in Christmas carols, trivia and enjoy a Christmas lunch.
Deputy mayor councillor Laurie Hickey said the day was a special day of laughter, good food, conversation and friendship.
“In this time when so many are doing it tough, whether due to loneliness, the drought, housing instability, food insecurity, we wanted to bring multiple generations together to share in the simplicity of friendship,” he said.
“Friendship starts with a conversation, a shared moment, a willingness to see each other not as strangers, but as someone on a journey just like us.
“Friendship is the opportunity to share a story; your story and their story.
“When we listen, when we make a genuine effort to understand, to hear and to empathise with one another, we show that we care and that we begin to say something quite miraculous.
“We say, your wellbeing matters too.”
Cr Hickey said council was looking forward to creating more inter-generational events once the Positive Ageing, Accessibility and Inclusion Plan launches.
