Second quarter costly for Demons

The much-anticipated top of the table clash between the Ararat Eagles and Lismore/Derrinallum saw the Eagles remain unbeaten after a 10 point win.

“It was a real good game of footy,” Lismore/Derrinallum coach Alec Wiltshire said of the game at Ararat’s Alexandra Oval.

The Demons had a 20-point lead at quarter time, but a six goal to one second term in favour of the Eagles proved decisive.

“We fell asleep in the second quarter,” lamented the Demons coach.

“They used the ball well and kept it off us, they spread well on their big ground.”

Lismore/Derrinallum outscored the Eagles in the third term to go into the final change with a one-point lead.

The home team did enough in the last quarter to gain the win, with Lismore/Derrinallum having no bench due to injury niggles.

“There was a definite scoring end, we kicked eight of our nine and they kicked eight of their 11 at that end,” Wiltshire said.

“We had the better first quarter but the third and fourth were pretty even.”

Despite the loss, Wiltshire was upbeat.

“Both teams are looking very good,” he said.

“We have a few things to work on, we’ll keep looking to improve and will peak later on.”

Wiltshire rated midfielder Blake Scott as the Demons best.

“Blake is as tough as nails, breaks lines and plays well despite always copping a lot of attention from the opposition.”

Max McIntosh, Will Langley, Austin Humphrey, Brock Reid and Henry Walsh were also in the best for the Demons.

Humphrey led the goal kickers with three, with Riley Browne and Scott kicking two goals each.
