Reading is magic
STUDENTS at St Colman’s Primary School celebrated Children’s Book Week with a parade and book fair last week.
Students, with the help of their parents, went to great lengths to create incredible costumes for a parade which marked the conclusion of the week celebrating books and promoting the benefits of reading.
“The parents have done an amazing job and really supported their kids,” St Colman’s Primary School principal Janet Cain said.
“It’s great to see them all so enthusiastic about the day and about reading.”
Mrs Cain said it had been “wonderful” to see the students get involved through the dress up day, picking out costumes of the characters which inspired them.
A wide range of characters representing the diversity of themes and genres in literature were represented in the student costumes, from emerging favourites to the classic characters who continue to connect the young and young at heart.
“We’ve seen a resurgence of Harry Potter, and we’ve got a group of kids challenging each other to get through as many of the Harry Potter books as they can,” Mrs Cain said.
“They’re actually sitting around reading at lunch together with their own book club.
“They’re dressed up in Harry Potter costumes today, so it’s great to see.”
As part of Children’s Book Week the school has helped students embrace reading with a book fair and activities which involve some of the best books to have been recently published.
“We have a book fair where the children can choose from a range of books to purchase,” Mrs Cain said.
“We also have all of the books which were shortlisted for book of the year, which are available for parents to have a look at and purchase if they want.
“The students also have their names labelled on books which are donated to our library, and we’ve also had a range of activities around all the shortlisted books throughout the week.”
