Rees has been attending weekly training sessions at Hamilton’s Monivae College and is enjoying the chance to train alongside the region’s best junior cricketers.

“The training sessions have been great, I’m learning new things all the time,” Rees said.

“The coaches have been good with little things like slight tweaks to my action and run up.”

Rees is enjoying the chance to train alongside the region’s best junior cricketers.

“It's been great to meet and train with players from as far as Mount Gambier and Horsham.

“It’s a good experience meeting new people."

Rees’ selection came after a strong 2024/25 season where the emerging pace bowler made his senior debut and ended up leading Pomborneit’s division two wicket tally.

Rees also had a strong under 15 country week at Horsham with the ball, as well as good cricket with Pomborneit’s under 16 and under 17 teams.

“It was good to go straight into division two, it’s a big jump from juniors.

“It was good to play against men alongside some good experienced cricketers, it helped to evolve my bowling.”

A keen sportsman, Rees has had a good winter playing full back for Camperdown’s under 16 football team.

“It’s been good going up to the under 16s, there’s a lot of bigger bodies especially among the Warrnambool teams.

“I’m keen to work on trying to get stronger for both my footy and cricket.”

Rees expects to have three more training sessions and a trial game or two before the final squad is announced.

“Whether I make the final team or not it’s good to get this kind of preparation before the season.”
