Plan finalised for Lakes Recreation Reserve

CORANGAMITE Shire Council voted to adopt the Lakes Recreation Reserve Master Plan at this month’s Ordinary Meeting of Council.

The plan focuses on the Lakes Recreation Reserve, located on Lake Bullen Merri Road in Camperdown, and hosts a number of user groups including Camperdown Cricket Club, Camperdown Golf Bowls Club, Camperdown Golf Club, Camperdown Pony Club, Hampden Tennis Association and Camperdown Horse Trials.

Four submissions were received on the draft plan, with alterations made to include reference to carrying out additional tree planting in the area and a project to renew the tennis courts.

Councillor Ruth Gstrein extended her gratitude to the user groups who contributed to the master plan, which will guide the development and maintenance of the Lakes Recreation Reserve for the next ten years.

“A number of key directions have been identified on this plan,” she said.

“One of the new ones that has come in is additional tree planting, so from that down to actually replacing the Golf Bowls Club as a potential project down the track.

“With the number of user groups down there, it does get a lot of use.

“I’m pleased to say that one of the key directions is upgrading the tennis club rooms and shelter area – it is to include a unisex toilet but unfortunately the budget doesn’t quite stretch that far, so there has been an allowance made in the 2026 budget to do some work on the club room.

“It’s a really good guiding document to lead the development of this lakes reserve for the next ten years.”

Cr Laurie Hickey seconded the motion, saying the reserve was a “very important part” for community leisure and recreation.

“The whole concept of having a recreational reserve out of town was somewhat murdered back in the 80s, but I think since then it has been proven that it’s a very valuable resource in a beautiful setting overlooking Lake Gnotuk and driving down between the lakes,” he said.

“They certainly recognise there are improvements that need to be made on some of the buildings and some development of some of the others.

“All in all, I think it’s a great facility, and this plan does set forward a ten-year reserve master plan to be able to achieve those to that end.”
