Noorat set to host annual community garage sale

PREPARATIONS are underway for the return of the Noorat and District Annual Garage Sale next month.

The Noorat and District Residents Association hosts the event each year, which largely goes unchanged as organisers find success in the simplicity of the format.

“We go out each year and anyone who wants to have a garage sale is welcome,” Noorat and District Residents Association member Anna Conheady said.

“It is more of a community event than anything else.

“We’ve had up to 25 houses participating in previous years, with those participating paying a small $10 fee which covers the cost of advertising and printing maps of the households taking part.

“Outside of that, everyone keeps their own proceeds.

“It creates a fun way to bring together everyone in the district who are looking to get rid of some of their things and make a little bit of money in the process.”

Mrs Conheady said the event had originally started around a decade ago as just a one-off idea, but continues to draw people in every year – both those looking to join in selling, and attracting buyers.

“We never dreamt it would go this long,” she said.

“Each year we wonder if it will go again, but it keeps building.

“It would be at least 10 or 12 years old at this stage and it manages to continue.

“We go each year and see what number we may get, but I think overall it is just a really good day.”

The Noorat and District Annual Garage Sale is open for those living in Noorat and immediate surrounding communities such as Glenormiston and Kolora.

There will also be an area set up at Noorat Primary School for those outside the area who would like to bring along some goods to be sold – while the school also uses the day as an opportunity to raise funds for a good cause.

“People are not allowed to have a specific car boot sale in the avenue, but if you want to set up a table at Noorat Primary you can,” Mrs Conheady said.

“Noorat Primary School uses the Annual Garage Sale as a fundraiser to benefit the students, so they often have refreshments available and a table of their own for the parents to contribute, to plus a table for parents.

“It’s a really good fundraiser for them and our community is always happy to support the school.”

Registration forms for any households wanting to participate are now available at The Shed in Noorat, or the Noorat Post Office.

Mrs Conheady encouraged everyone to come along on the day, with no shortage of eager bargain hunters descending on the little village at the foot of the mount each year.

“I think it’s a great community day,” she said.

“People get out and about, have a wander and get to meet others.

“There are a lot of people who follow garage sales who come from far and wide. We’ve even had people travel from Melbourne in previous years, which creates exposure for our little town.

“The Shed usually stays open on the day with tea and coffee as well, so it is a nice community get together.”

The Noorat and District Annual Garage Sale this year will be held on Saturday, February 22.
