New group to plan for climate change

WORK on tackling climate change in Corangamite Shire is heating up with applications now open for a new group to develop the future plans.

Corangamite Shire Council has announced it is forming a community reference group to help develop a Climate Change Action Plan after months of research, public consultation and feedback on the draft 10-year Environment and Sustainability Strategy.

Mayor Kate Makin said council has started developing a Climate Change Action Plan, and is now seeking expressions of interest from community members to participate on a Climate Change Reference Group during the Action Plan development process.

“We are looking for community members across the shire who understand the challenges posed by climate change and would like to contribute to the shire’s climate response,” she said.

“A broad range of people with diverse backgrounds and expertise will make the group more effective in problem-solving and innovation, so I encourage anyone to apply.

“Council is committed to addressing the current and future impacts of climate change on the health, economy and wellbeing of residents and our environment.”

In the Environment and Sustainability Strategy 2024-2034, council acknowledged the importance of addressing climate change.

As part of this acknowledgement, council recognised the need to develop a Climate Change Action Plan to help the organisation and wider community to mitigate the impacts of climate change and adapt to changes that are already happening.

Climate change was also identified by the community as a key opportunity in the Community Vision 2040 report.

To join the reference group, nominees must live, work, study, volunteer, or own a business in the shire.

Cr Makin encouraged interested people to read the terms of reference and answer a short questionnaire at corangamite.vic.gov.au/CCRG-EOI

Applications close by June 20, 2024.
