MP calls for greater drought support

MEMBER for Western Victoria Bev McArthur has continued to push for greater drought support to be offered for the district’s farmers.

In Parliament last week Mrs McArthur moved a motion in the Legislative Council demanding urgent and targeted support for drought-stricken regions.

She called for action to include subsidised water, financial assistance for fodder and water delivery and meaningful government intervention to sustain rural communities.

Mrs McArthur said the government was “sleepwalking through a rural emergency in Victoria”.

“Rainfall is at historic lows, feed and water supplies are vanishing and farm families are facing the kind of hardship that would break most people,” she said.

“These aren’t just numbers on a page, but livelihoods, communities and the very backbone of Victoria’s food supply.

“It is utterly unacceptable that while South Australia is stepping up to support its farmers, Victoria is lagging.

“Too many in this government seem to think food comes from supermarkets, when it actually comes from farms who are running out of water, feed and hope.”

“Victoria’s farming families don’t want sympathy – they are calling for action from the government now.”

Although the motion passed unanimously, Mrs McArthur warned the government that words are not enough and called for immediate action to be taken.
