Lucky escape for driver following rail crash

POLICE are investigating the circumstances of an incident in Vite Vite last Sunday night, which saw a train collide with a car.

Camperdown Police Sergeant David Gaw said no-one was inside the vehicle when the train collided with a small Hyundai hatchback at around 9.15pm on Sunday, April 13.

“The driver had an accident just prior to the crossing, but the front of the car ended up on the actual tracks themselves,” he said.

“She got out of the car and then a freight train came through and clipped the front of the car.”

Victoria Police units were joined at the scene by Country Fire Authority (CFA) and Ambulance Victoria units.

Sgt Gaw encouraged drivers to take care on backroads, particularly at night when visibility is low.

“Be aware of your surrounds and your speed,” he said.

“Speed was not a factor in the incident – we’re still investigating.

“Sometimes on back roads when it’s dark, it is very hard.”
