Lucky escape
LAST weekend’s strong winds saw trees downed and buildings damaged across Victoria, but Camperdown escaped the worst of the weather.

Camperdown’s State Emergency Services (SES) unit responded to around six calls, with a support unit also assisting Warrnambool’s SES unit.
Camperdown SES member Michael Carman said most of the call outs were for downed trees over roads.
“We also had one tree on top of a car and I think the car was a write-off after that,” he said.
“We then did a couple of building jobs in Warrnambool, mostly just replacing tiles.”
Other call outs included a fallen tree on a property on Castle Carey Road and a tree which closed down Chocolyn Road.
Across the state, SES units received close to 2000 requests for assistance – over 1400 of these requests were for felled trees while around 320 were for damaged buildings.
Camperdown SES community engagement officer Kylie Warren said the area suffered only minor impacts from the weather event in comparison to the rest of the state.
“We are appreciative of the community for their own preparedness, ensuring there were minimal preventable damages by securing loose items and taking extra care whilst travelling in the stormy conditions,” she said.
“We are always on the lookout for potential volunteers, so if anyone is interested go to www.ses.vic.gov.au/join-us and fill in the form or have a chat to the crew who will be out and about at this weekend’s Sunday market.”
Mr Carman reminded residents to keep vigilant.
“Don’t park under trees when there is windy weather on the way,” he said.
“Clean your gutters out – there’s some more rain coming.”
