Learn how climate change impacts shire
CORANGAMITE Shire Council is inviting members of the community to participate in a series of workshops to increase understanding of how climate risks might affect the shire.
Corangamite Shire Council mayor councillor Kate Makin said local knowledge gathered at the workshops would form the basis of the Community Adaptation and Resilience Plan 2025-2035.
“If you want to learn more about how our climate is changing, or if you have ideas about how we can better prepare for extreme weather events in the future, we want to hear from you,” she said.
“Your ideas and participation are crucial as we navigate the challenges ahead together.
“The Community Adaptation and Resilience Plan will be a tool for the community to use, such as through community emergency planning.
“We’re no strangers to fires and floods in Corangamite and our community has always been amazing at looking out for one another.
“But with predictions of hotter days, more heatwaves and droughts, fewer but more severe storms, and coastal erosion, we can learn from past experiences to prepare for the future.
Cr Makin said the shire wanted to hear from a diverse range of voices to ensure the Community Adaption and Resilience Plan 2025-2035 was robust
“Please join us at one of the in-person workshops and drop-in sessions across the shire to have a chat, and share your insights, experiences and ideas,” she said.
“All community members are most welcome and encouraged to come and share stories and learn climate risk and community resilience.
“If you can’t make it, there is a survey on the council website until Wednesday, May 7.”
The plan will identify climate risks and develop local resilience and adaptions plans for the following communities:
Coastal (Simpson, Princetown, Port Campbell, Timboon and surrounding areas, including the coast);
Central (Camperdown, Cobden, Terang and Noorat and surrounding areas); and,
Northern (Skipton, Lismore, Derrinallum and Darlington and surrounding areas).
The first workshop will be held on Monday, April 28 at the Terang Civic Hall Rose Room from 5-8pm.
The next workshops will take place on Tuesday, April 29 at the Simpson Community Hall, 9-11am, the Port Campbell Art Space from 12-2pm and the Timboon Bowling Club from 5-8pm.
On Wednesday, April 30 there will be a session at the Camperdown Community House from 1-4pm.
On Thursday, May 1 sessions will be held at Lismore Community Centre from 8-10am, a session in Derrinallum with the venue yet to be confirmed from 1-3pm and another at the Skipton Mechanics Institute Hall from 5-8pm.
On Friday, May 2 another session will be held in Camperdown at the Killara Centre from 8-10am, while a final session at Cobden (Venue TBC) will be held from 10.30am to 12.30pm.
The survey can also be accessed online at corangamite.vic.gov.au/CARP.
