“It was a fantastic, pleasing win, the boys played really well,” an elated Bloods coach Lewy Taylor said.

The home team started well, booting five goals to one, kicking with the wind in the first quarter.

“It was a pretty solid breeze, Warrnambool got out of the blocks well,” Taylor said.

“For the first 15 minutes of the game we looked like a team coming off a bye.”

A five goal to one second quarter from the Bloods set the tone for the rest of the game.

“After quarter time we played on our terms and we played a really good brand of footy,” Taylor said.

Keeping the Blues to five behinds when they had the wind in the third quarter was a huge plus for Taylor.

“We defended and set up well in the third quarter; I was really happy with outscoring them in that term,” he said.

Key forward Rhys Buck stood out on the day, kicking four goals.

“Rhys had a big game, he was a big presence up forward, he probably could have kicked a few more but he played a massive role for us,” Taylor said.

“We had three key forwards (Buck, Lachie Wareham and Ryan Tanner), which really stretched their defence, there was always every chance one of them would really stand out.”

Taylor was also full of praise for defender Sam Crawley, who restricted league leading goalkicker Luke Cody to two goals.

“Cody kicked two goals early, then Sam did a fantastic job on him after that; he shut him down well,” he said.

Taylor, who has been reappointed as coach by Terang Mortlake for the 2026 season, was rapt with the contribution of his younger players.

“We had six kids playing, they’ve all mixed in well and all are contributing,” he said.

“The club is in a really good state.”

This week the Bloods travel to Leura Oval to take on Camperdown, a game Taylor is looking forward to.

“It’s a pretty important game, Camperdown have been playing good footy, they got us in round one but we’re focused on playing well there before we look any further,” he said.
