Congratulations: Jason and Cassie Greaves were thrilled to learn their store, Greavesy’s Fruit N Veg, had been named among the top 10 finalists in the 2025 A Better Choice Retailer of the Year Award.

Owners Cassie and Jason Greaves learned last week their store had placed sixth in this year’s A Better Choice Retailer of the Year awards.

Mrs Greaves said she was pleased to again see Greavesy’s Fruit N Veg named among the top 10 in Victoria despite competing against prominent retailers in larger population centres.

“We’re so thankful because we are in a regional town while a lot of the top 10 are in bigger cities, such as Melbourne or Geelong, so they’ve obviously got the higher traffic flow,” Mrs Greaves said.

“It’s always special but it is even more so this year because the cost of living is impacting spending at a time when a lot of our customers are farmers.

“They’re buying food for their

animals, they need to, so they’re not spending as much in town.

“It has been difficult conditions for everyone so we didn’t have high hopes this year, but to see so much support is terrific.”

Well deserved: Jason and Cassie Greaves thanked customers who supported the store in earning another top 10 finish in the award, mixed in with retailers from major centres such as Melbourne and Geelong.

Mrs Greaves said the result marked the fifth consecutive year Greavesy’s Fruit N Veg had been recognised among the top six grocers in the state, but felt a change in voting this year had favoured retailers with more foot traffic.

“They had changed it so only two votes per customer counted over a 28-day period,” she said.

“We knew there was no way we would be in the running for Retailer of the Year because when you look at places like Geelong, they’ve got 20 customers for every one we have.

“We’re still proud, this is the fifth year now and as soon as it’s on we have people come in, get their receipt and scan.

“If it wasn’t for the customers doing it we wouldn’t have placed so well in the past five years.”

Mrs Greaves said the community had showed its support not only in voting, but in offering congratulations after hearing of the store’s success.

“It’s nice to see the support,” she said.

“We were a bit disappointed to only get sixth but the community support puts it all into perspective.

“As long as our customers are happy, we’re happy.

“It’s what we do it for.”

A Better Choice is a national initiative designed to encourage people to support their local green grocers.

Mrs Greaves said she was happy for all the retailers recognised under this year’s awards.

“It puts focus on green grocers and that’s the whole point of A Better Choice,” she said.

“We want to encourage people to ditch the big companies and support the small independents.

“Keeping your dollar local makes a big difference for everyone.”
