Grants available

AFTER a resounding success with last year’s project, Heytesbury District Landcare Network (HDLN) are bringing back the Biofund grants program.

The program provides an opportunity for landholders in the Heytesbury region to benefit from the revegetation of their properties.

HDLN are seeking expressions of interest for another round of grants with thousands of seedlings available.

Seventeen landholders are receiving between 200 and 2000 seedlings, with 3.63 hectares of direct seed going in.

More landholders will be benefitting from the program as last year there were 11 recipients.

HDLN Landcare coordinator Michelle Leech said it was great to see the program expanded.

“It was fantastic to see a record number of expressions of interest coming in last year, with nearly four times more demand for native seedlings than in previous years,” she said.

“With landholders increasingly recognising the productivity benefits of shelter for stock, we’re seeing more native vegetation going in.

“The potential for native vegetation to guard against soil erosion, act as a buffer slowing the entry of nutrients into waterways, increase biodiversity and beneficial insect numbers and create an aesthetically pleasing place to live and work is also significant.”

A variety of projects will be considered, including the planting of native vegetation for biodiversity, shelterbelts, erosion control, waterway management or educational reasons, projects focused on the protection and enhancement of existing native vegetation or other projects with the potential to benefit natural resource management and the local community.

Interested landholders can visit https://www.heytesburylandcare.org.au/fact-sheets-forms or call 5598 3755 to lodge an expression of interest before September 30.
