The college hosted the crazy hair day last Friday to support Year Nine student Isla Spokes, who had her hair cut in front of her peers.

The cut was to support Variety’s Hair with Heart campaign, which supports children who lose their hair through illnesses such as alopecia or cancer treatment by providing wigs.

Student Representative Council coordinator Lucy Jubb said all funds raised through the crazy hair day went towards the charity.

“It was a fantastic, fun day at school that saw the craziest hair dos rewarded with some delicious prizes,” she said.

“We thank all those who participated and donated.

“We are so proud of Isla who had 45cm of hair cut off, ready to send off to make wigs for those in need.”

Isla’s mother Kylie Spokes said Isla had done it five years ago, managing to grow her hair past the 35cm minimum requirement for hair donation.

“I know there was another girl at school who did the same a few times, so I believe Isla saw her example,” she said.

“She likes having long hair, but thought it was something she could do to help others.

“It’s a very selfless act, and it’s nice to see where people can make a difference and have an impact.

“It’s a good example for her because a lot of her peers in Years Eight, Nine and 10 were there to see it cut.

“It’s a great example of people doing acts of kindness and showing how a small act can be a good contribution to people you don’t know.”

Ms Spokes said she was grateful for all the support for Isla’s campaign, which has raised $1067 at the time of publication.

“We’re really thankful to our friends and family and our school and church communities who have generously donated,” she said.

“It was wonderful support from the school to do the crazy hair day, which linked it in nicely.

“It’s great support from the school for her.”
