Game 400 for Evans

A MAJOR milestone awaits Tony Evans this weekend, with the veteran lining up for his 400th game for the Pomborneit Cricket Club.

Tony Evans will this weekend mark his 400th game for Pomborneit.

Evans will become the sixth player to reach the milestone for the club, following Geoff Boyd, Brian Boyd, Ian Boyd, Jim Boyd and Luke Reynolds.

“It’s quite a thrill to be joining that list of players,” Evans said.

Still playing at the age of 62, an age where most have given the game away, is something Evans is proud of.

“I have been reflecting a bit lately, the fact that I can still play at my age is something I’m grateful for.”

Evans started his senior career for Melbourne club Riverside as a teenager, before moving to Camperdown as a 17 year-old.

Joining the Bookaar Cricket Club in 1980/81, Evans spent six seasons with the Pelicans, including playing in an A grade premiership.

A move to share farming in the Tesbury area saw Evans move to Pomborneit for the 1986/87 season where he has stayed ever since.

“The old Timboon/Stoneyford competition had more dairy farmer friendly hours of play.”

Evans was a member of the Pomborneit Gold premiership team of 1989/90 and the division three flag winning team of 2019/20.

Work commitments over the years have meant it has taken until his 40th season at the club to reach the 400 game milestone.

“I have missed a lot of games over the years through running my own business, though in recent years I haven’t missed too many.”

The last couple of seasons have seen Evans have a golden run.

In 2024/25 Evans made 404 runs and won the cricketer of the year award for the South West CA division three competition.

This season he already has 165 runs on the board including a century against Boorcan in division three.

“I really like the new synthetic wickets the club has put down at Pomborneit and South Purrumbete.

“They give a bit more bounce than a lot of the other wickets which allows me to play off the back foot more.”

The growth in recent years at Pomborneit has been a big factor in keeping Evans keen to be involved.

‘It’s been an exciting time to be involved with the growth in the club’s juniors and female programs.

“With entire families playing at the club, the social side of it has been wonderful with a real community and family feel.”

Evans also plays regularly with the South West over 60s team and loves the distraction the game brings.

“For me cricket is about turning things off from life and just enjoying the game in like-minded company.”
