Flag in sight for Demons

LISMORE Derrinallum is through to the 2025 Mininera senior football grand final after a thumping 86-point win over the Ararat Eagles in the second semi-final last weekend.

After a relatively even first quarter, the Demons kept the Eagles goalless for the rest of the game in the 14.19.103 to 2.5.17 win at Willaura.

“The first quarter was a good contest,” Lismore/Derrinallum coach Alec Wiltshire said.

“After that we took over with the style we wanted to play.”

Most pleasing for Wiltshire was the third quarter where the Demons kicked five goals, their highest scoring quarter of the game.

“Our third quarter into the wind was outstanding, our run and carry was really strong,” he said.

The defence was a highlight for the Demons coach.

“Our defence had a lot of pressure in the first quarter and really stood up and continued to do so for the rest of the game.

“Our clearance and contested possessions were down at quarter time, we made a few adjustments and improved greatly in that area.”

Defender Dale Marquand was best for Lismore/Derrinallum in the win.

“At full back Dale gave up probably 25 centimetres to his opponent, he just forced the contest, he knows his limitations and plays his role well.”

Henry Walsh and Austin Humphrey were also in the Demon’s best.

“Henry probably lowered his colours in the first quarter but then dominated the game, his hit-out work and play around the ground was outstanding.

“Austin is unassuming, works hard and presents well, he played a great game.”

Spearhead Lachie Constable kicked four goals for Lismore/Derrinallum, with Jack McCallum lively in kicking three and Humphrey, and Jack Parker kicking two goals each.

Apart from some soreness the Demons got through the game injury free, happy to be in the decider.

“Getting there (to the grand final) is something to be proud of, everyone is excited, but we won’t be complacent.

“We still see Ararat as the team to beat, they’ve been on top for most of the year.”

Lismore/Derrinallum is also through to the reserves decider after an 18 point win in the second semi-final, also against the Ararat Eagles.

Fraser Toohey, Brock Reid, Xavier Coutts, Jack Sanders, Riley Wandel and Jason Germon were the best for the Demon’s reserves.

Coutts kicked three goals, with Toohey, Brad Schiltz, Matt Bacon, Riley Browne, Steve Fisher and Hunter Thompson kicking a goal each.

Lismore Derrinallum’s finals campaign on the netball courts came to an end last weekend.

After a close four quarters, the Demons’ 18 and under netballers lost by two goals to Tatyoon in Sunday’s semi-final, 22-24.
