Flag for Freeballers

FREEBALLERS finally broke through for their first Corangamite volleyball flag when they defeated Poachers in the A grade winter final at Cobden Recreation Centre.

Ladder leaders Freeballers went into the finals as favourites and they ultimately justified that ranking with a close semi-final win over Cooriemungle Bulls before accounting for Poachers in the decider.

The Bulls began slowly in the semi, losing the first two sets before taking the third and needing only one more point to force the match into a fifth.

That did not happen, so Freeballers survived to take on Poachers.

Poachers defeated NOBTS comprehensively in their semi-final but Freeballers were too strong in the final.

Poachers lost the first set easily but fought out the next two to make their opponents earn their victory.

The A grade standard was high, with five teams qualifying for the top division finals.

Fifth team Gorge Chocolates were eliminated early by the Bulls but showed all season that they will be a force in the spring competition.

B grade finals were played as a four-team round robin, with the two highest-scoring teams contesting the final.

After the qualifying matches were completed, Champs reigned supreme over Cowgirls in the final.

Other B grade teams, Ballbusters and Net Ninjas, were certainly competitive but didn’t have the capacity to win vital points.

The next volleyball season will begin in week one of term four; Tuesday, October 7, with new players and teams asked to ring 0429 921876 or 0428 799690 for more details.
