After a very even first three quarters, the Tigers piled on seven goals in the last quarter, keeping the Rovers goalless in the process.

Playing in the heat, Tigers coach Isaac Templeton said “everyone was cooked”.

“We didn’t play a practice match so it was everyone’s first full hit out,” he said.

“Our fitness came to the fore in the final quarter which was pleasing.”

Tyson Hogan was named best for Woorndoo Mortlake after his five goal performance.

“Tyson started in the centre, but really made a difference for us when we swung him forward for the second quarter.”

Templeton was full of praise for defender Ed Gubbins,

“Ed was really important down back for us, he held it together down there.”

Warrnambool recruits Otto Opperman, Darcy Graham, Damian McCorkell and Thomas Ludeman, were all named among Woorndoo Mortlake’s best.

“They’ve been great pick-ups and have slotted in very well around the group,” Templeton said.

“We’ve got a few things to work on but overall I am happy with our start.”

It was a different story in the reserves, with Rovers running out 54 point winners; Matthew Bourchier named as the Tigers best.

In the netball, Woorndoo Mortlake won A grade 30-21, SMW Rovers won the B grade and under 18s, with the Tigers getting the points in the under 13s.
