Dyson calls for greater support for farmers
INDEPENDENT Candidate for Wannon Alex Dyson has reaffirmed his support for Wannon’s farmers as the long-term dry conditions continue to impact the region’s agriculture sector.
“Wannon has a world-class farming industry full of resilient people, but it’s clear that financial and mental hardship are pushing many farmers towards breaking point,” Mr Dyson said.
“Farmers have told me they have two-three weeks left of water, and that buying in water could send them bankrupt.
“They need urgent support, but their voices are simply not being heard by the major parties.
“If elected, I will ensure the unique needs of our region’s farmers are heard in Canberra.”
Mr Dyson said he wanted to use his voice to demand urgent action and support for farmers.
“In the short term, we need transport subsidies to cart feed and water, and to provide interest subsidies for farmers to buy in feed,” he said.
“Longer term, we need to revisit the Federal Government’s changes to how regional drought assistance is triggered.
“It’s clear that the current system is not working.
“I’ve also announced my support for a $50 million Agriculture Mental Health Plan, recently called for by over 30 Australian rural and healthcare organisations.”
