Dan Tehan questions energy bills
FEDERAL Member for Wannon Dan Tehan is calling for Climate Change and Energy Minister Chris Bowen to explain why pricing reforms are being delivered next year, rather than when Wannon residents are struggling with rising costs.
Mr Tehan said the recent announcement – which is intended to reduce power price hikes by energy retailers – would be “zero comfort” to Australians hit with another rise in their electricity bills.
“Australians facing a $300 hike to their electricity bill will be asking Chris Bowen – where is the $275 cut to my bill that you promised,” he said.
“The Australian Energy Regulator says the proportion of Australians entering energy retailer hardship programs continues to increase.
“The average debt of customers on hardship programs has increased over the past 12 months from $1685 to $1947.
“Minister Bowen is taking no responsibility for the electricity price hikes happening on his watch.
“Inflation, high interest rates, higher transmission costs in NSW, coal generator and network outages, and an ideologically-driven renewables-only approach all contributed to the electricity price hikes, but what is Minister Bowen doing about that?”
