Conversions costly for Tigers
WOORNDOO Mortlake had a 8.16.64 to 5.9.39 loss to the undefeated Ararat Eagles at Woorndoo on Saturday.
The match was even on the scoreboard for three quarters the Eagles were up by three points at the last change before running away with the game in the final term.
“They did play better than us on the day,” Tigers coach Isaac Templeton said.
“We had a number of chances but couldn’t convert our forward 50 entries.”
Both teams were missing players due to injury, with Templeton impressed with the Eagles’ style of play.
“They move the ball well, at this stage they and Lismore/Derrinallum are the competition standouts,” he said
Otto Opperman, Ed Gubbins and Kane Killen were best for Woorndoo/Mortlake.
“Otto and Ed are both having great seasons,” Templeton said.
“Kane has put together a few really strong weeks and will keep getting better.”
This week Woorndoo/Mortlake take on Wickliffe/Lake Bolac at Lake Bolac.
“We need everyone firing in the second half of the season, we know we have plenty of upside,” Templeton said,
The Eagles were too strong in the reserves, scoring a 8.9.57 to 3.8.26 win.
Chris Crawley, Tahi Pompey and Sam Whytcross were best for Woorndoo/Mortlake.
The under 16.5 Tigers had the bye with Ararat not fielding a team in that competition this year.
The Ararat Eagles had a 38-24 win in the A grade netball.
“We were right in it until half-time, they played good netball in the second half,” Woorndoo/Mortlake coach Bec Rohan said.
“We have a few things we need to work on.”
Ararat led by two goals at half-time, outscoring the Tigers 23 goals to 11 in the second half.
“We lacked height up forward with (regular goal shooter) Brooke Richardson out,” Rohan said.
“Credit to Ararat’s defence, they were really strong.”
Nicole Anderson and Elise Killen scored 12 goals each for Woorndoo/Mortlake.
“Elise took on the goal attack role, she worked hard and played well,” Rodan said
Rohan rated wing defence Brooke Eldridge as best for the Tigers.
“Brooke played a strong defensive role, she really stood up and provided a strong link for us,” she said.
The Tigers now sit four points out of the top five after eight rounds.
“We’ve got a few things to work through at training, just need to get that consistency in our performance,” Rohan said.
The B grade game saw a 42-13 win to Ararat.
Alannah Miller and Isabella Pickford were best for Woorndoo/Mortlake, with Miller scoring six goals.
Ararat had a big 35-7 win in the C grade netball.
