Celebrating together: The Cobden Walking Group have been walking together for 30 years and celebrated the occasion with lunch at the Cobden Golf Club last Tuesday.

The group began leaving the senior citizens hall on Tuesdays and soon after added Thursdays as interest increased.

Cobden Walking Club spokesperson Joyce de Konig said the group had a large crowd of Camperdown walkers join them on their first walk, ending with a cuppa together.

“We were very lucky for about eight years when Tracey Mitchell was able to drive us in the community bus on a trip every six weeks to a destination of our choice,” she said.

“Some of our trips were overnight, like the Cape Otway Lighthouse and Portland – all great fun.

“Unfortunately, all things must change and the bus is no longer available, but we still make use of the local bus and take trips into Camperdown or Timboon for the day.

“We hope to continue on for quite a few years yet.”

Mrs de Konig said she was the only current member of the group who had been there since its inception who was still walking.

“Besides myself is Doreen Sullivan, who is still a member of the group but no longer walks with us,” she said.

“I’ve got a photo album here and a book full of anything in the newspaper relating to the walking group for members to look at.

“As long as there’s somebody ready to walk, we’ll be walking.”

The large group often stop together during their walks for a cuppa or to sit and talk to build camaraderie between those who don’t walk side-by-side.

Mrs de Konig said spending more time together outside walking made walking together more enjoyable.
