What a treat: Beth MacDonald and Nancy Fowler were among those to enjoy delicious scones and wonderful company at Mother’s Day Devonshire tea held by the Cobden Country Women’s Association on Monday.

The event, hosted at the Cobden Uniting Church on Monday, drew around 60 people to enjoy a morning tea in celebration of the mothers who have enriched the lives of everyone.

Cobden CWA president Netty Hose said the occasion continued a long history of putting together an event for Mother’s Day – serving as both a fundraiser for the CWA and a place for the community to enjoy scones, tea and each other’s company.

“Many, many years ago our Cobden branch started holding something special for Mother’s Day,” she said.

“We’ve continued throughout the years by always having something – like we’ve had bridal parades, but there’s always something for Mother’s Day because it’s a special day.

“This year we opted for simplicity, hosting a scone morning tea to make things a little easier on the ladies.

“The community of Cobden and surrounding can come and sit, have a chat and enjoy our scones.”

Mrs Hose offered a heartfelt thank you to the community for its ongoing support, with no shortage of people stopping by to enjoy a morning scone.

“I can’t stress highly enough of a thank you to the people in the shops and that around Cobden – they all support us,” she said.

“We had a lady come in from the supermarket and ordered 10 scones for there.

“One of our ladies goes around and gets some orders and she delivers them all for morning tea.

“That is really good. It involves everything.

“We can’t say thank you enough to the community for their support.”

The funds raised support the CWA in its efforts to give back to Cobden.

“We put back in to the community, whether it’s the Country Fire Authority, our healthcare services or the Scouts,” Mrs Hose said.

“We help wherever we can.

“This is what CWA is about.

“It’s how CWA started, because of the women that were left when their men went off to war.

“They were lonely, so they got together – all these years later it’s the same thing, over scones and Devonshire tea.”
