One CFA unit from Lismore responded to a fire at 2.42pm.

The fire was contained within a single outdoor bin.

The incident was deemed under control at 2.48pm and declared safe at 2.51pm.

Lismore CFA captain Sanjan Dawson said the fire could have been prevented by correct disposal of cigarette butts, with a cigarette believed to have been the cause.

“When disposing of cigarette butts, you should put them into a designated cigarette container that is made out of either glass or metal, so it can’t catch fire,” he said.

“Make sure you put your butts out before you place them in a cigarette container to try and avoid more bin fires.”

The bin was expected to be replaced in the coming weeks.
