Burn-off escapes

THE Country Fire Authority (CFA) is urging farmers to hold off their burn-offs a bit longer during the dry conditions after units attended an escaped burn-off over the weekend.

Nine vehicles were called to a property on Naroghid Road in Camperdown on Saturday, May 11 at around 12.34pm.

Camperdown CFA brigade captain Michael Carmen said the response included six tankers.

“We had units from Boorcan, Cobrico, Bostocks Creek, Camperdown, Tesbury and Cobden attend,” he said.

“They were on scene for about two hours blacking out.

“The landholder was burning off, and the wind just picked up and spread it into the adjoining tree plantation.

“The farmer had all the correct things there – he had his own water truck there, but it wasn’t enough to keep it in his control lines when the wind picked up.”

The incident was deemed under control at around 1.11pm and deemed safe at 2.27pm.

Mr Carmen encouraged farmers to reconsider their burn-offs as conditions remain dry across the district.

“If you can put off burning off for a little while longer while it’s dry – wait for the rain,” he said.

“Take really good care with it – always have someone watching it.”
