An eight goal to two opening quarter set up the 11.6.72 to 9.8.62 win for the Bombers.

“The boys really came out firing,” Cobden coach Brody Mahoney said.

“It was a bit slippery in the first quarter, we were the team that settled first, we were clean by hand and foot which allowed us to open up the game.”

The game then tightened up over the second and third terms.

“It became a real arm wrestle after quarter time when Warrnambool adjusted to the conditions.”

The Blues finished strongly in the final quarter, kicking four goals to Cobden’s one, but never getting closer than 10 points.

“We had that buffer from the first quarter which was super important,” Mahoney said.

After falling 14 points short in the round seven encounter against Warrnambool, Mahoney was thrilled to get the win over the Blues.

“Really pleased to get the points this time, we let it slip the first time around.

“Warrnambool is one of the better contested, tackling teams.”

Warrnambool forward Luke Cody kicked nine goals in that round seven clash, this time it was a different story.

“Luke Cody was the difference last time, Sam Thow did a fantastic job on him on Saturday, restricting him to one goal.”

Mahoney added that his backline was pivotal in the win.

“Our backline was superb, it’s hard to single too many players out though as the win was a genuine team effort.”

This week Cobden play Camperdown at the Leura Oval.

“Playing Camperdown is always one of our biggest games,” Mahoney said.

“They’re been playing some pretty good footy, no doubt they’ll be looking to get one back after we defeated them last time.”

Cobden also got the points in the reserves football with a six point win, 7.2.44 to 5.8.38.

Brodie Foster, Thomas Spokes and Tom Mahony were Cobden’s best, with Foster the only multiple goalkicker in the match with two.

The under 18 game saw Warrnambool get the points with a 12.6.78 to 7.8.50 win.

Finn Darcy kicked two goals, with Ryan Mottram, Ollie Rial and Eddie Walsh best for the Bombers.

In the Open netball, top of the ladder Warrnambool scored a 58-45 win.

“It was quite disappointing, credit to Warrnambool, they are very strong defensively,” Cobden coach Nadine McNamara said.

The first half was a tight contest, with Warrnambool up by five goals at the main break.

“Being five goals down, we thought we’d try a few different combinations to shake up the game a bit for a point of difference,” McNamara said.

“Unfortunately, they didn’t quite work, though we learnt a bit from those moves.”

Sarah Moroney was best for Cobden in the loss.

“Sarah had a tough role and defended the best she could, she intercepted well and caused some turnovers.

“We were without regular goal keeper Remeny McCann which meant we lacked a third defensive rotation.”

Molly Hutt, who scored 23 goals, and Jess McGlade were also in the Bombers’ best.

“We played an open circle with Molly as goal attack, she was really instrumental and shot well.

“Jess worked really hard for us in goal defence.”

With third position now hard for Cobden to attain, the fourth placed Bombers have their sights on a strong finish before the finals.

“We have Camperdown and Portland the next two weeks who are fifth and sixth, they will be really strong hit-outs in the lead up to finals.”

In the division one netball, Cobden recorded a strong 50-19 win.

Kyla Groves, Jessica Walsh and Nikki Clover were Cobden’s best, with Jessica Bouchier shooting 28 goals and Hannah Anderson 19.

Warrnambool got the points in division two with a 38-31 win.

Morgan Nelson, Courtney Gatens and Leah Dickson were best for the Bombers, with Hailey Mahony scoring 21 goals.

Warrnambool was too strong in the division three game, scoring a 42-17 win.

Jacque Dickson, Amy Kavenagh and Eisha Howard were best for the Bombers, with Maggie Conheady scoring 11 goals.

Warrnambool had a 36-23 win in the 17 and under netball.

Cobden’s best were Mia McVilly, Marley Howard and Emily Hickey, with McVilly scoring 10 goals.

In the 17 and under reserves netball, Warrnambool scored a 37-12 win.

Isabella Wain, Layla Blomfield and Sophie Halliday were best for the Bombers, with Blomfield scoring six goals.

In the 15 and under netball, Warrnambool had a 40-12 victory.

Best for Cobden were Maddison Fisher, Isabella Wain and Ava Bonner, with Bonner shooting eight goals.

In the 15 and under reserves, Warrnambool scored a 41-13 win.

For Cobden, Olivia Bignell shot nine goals and was the Bombers best alongside Chali Robbins and Gracie Pearce.

Cobden had a 29-15 win in the 13 and under netball.

Olivia Bignell scored 15 goals and Grace Hester 14 for Cobden, with Lily Baxter, Bignell and Dakoda Baker the Bombers best.

The 13 and under reserves game saw Cobden score a 24-5 win.

Taja Delaney-Hutchins, Charlotte Robertson and Mahli Baxter were best for the Bombers, with Emma Bonner scoring 18 goals and Grace Barber six.
