Cobden was three points ahead at half time and 11 down at three quarter time but was overrun in the final term.

“Terang Mortlake kicked an early one in the last and got on a roll which we couldn’t stop,” Bombers coach Brody Mahoney said.

“We wanted to improve our start which we did but one bad quarter has proved costly for us every week so far.”

Mahoney was full of praise for recruit Matty Drayton, now three games into his career at Cobden.

“Matty's last two games have been awesome, he’s such a hard worker on and off the field,” Mahoney said.

“Thomas Roberts played his role well, he was very clean when the ball was on the ground when the ball was wet.”

Teenager Jonty Robertson made his senior debut and Mahoney liked what he saw.

“Jonty played down back for us and was very solid, a strong debut.”

Mahoney said the Cobden players enjoyed the occasion of playing on Anzac Day and would be keen to do it again.

“Mortlake was in incredible nick too; full credit to them for getting the ground up like that.”

A home game against Hamilton awaits the Bombers this week.

“I think we'll bounce back strongly; we’ll keep trying to attack.”

The Bombers had a win in the reserves, 10-6-66 to the Bloods 7-4-46.

For Cobden, Thomas Spokes kicked three goals, with Gryff Dwyer and Ryan Mottram named best players.

Cobden also had a 17-point win in the under 18 football, 8-7-55 to 6-2-38.

Campbell Walsh kicked four goals and was named in the best players alongside cousin Edmund Walsh and Kayden Daffy.

The other junior football matches were played at Cobden on Sunday.

Terang Mortlake had a comprehensive win in the under 16s, 20-19-139 to Cobden’s no score, with Archie White and Micah Darcy named best for the Bombers.

A big win to Cobden in the under 14s, 12-14-86 to 1-3-9.

Sam Mahncke kicked four goals and Fletcher White three for the Bombers; that pair also named as Cobden’s best.

Terang Mortlake got the points in the under 12s, 6-3-39 to 3-0-18, with Jack Bourke and Mitchell Synott best for the Bombers.

In the Open netball, Cobden recorded a 50-44 win.

“It’s nice to be on the board,” coach Nadine McNamara said of the Bombers first victory of the 2025 season.

“It was a scrappy game in the rainy conditions but we were pleased to come out of it with a gritty win.”

Nikki Clover shot 34 goals in her return to the team.

McNamara praised Sophie Hinkley for her best on court effort.

“Sophie played wing attack and goal attack, she showed great leadership in attack, brought Nikki into the game as well as all her teammates along with her.”

Playing bottom placed Hamilton this week, McNamara said the Kangaroos were “fairly unknown and have lots of new players so we’re not sure what to expect”.

“The competition is very close,” McNamara said.

Division one netball saw a 46-30 goal win to the Bombers.

Jessica Bouchier and Jaymie Finch scored 20 goals apiece for Cobden, with Macey Hicks and Kyla Groves the best players.
