Anzac Day, Australia’s national day of remembrance for those who served and died in all wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations, will this year be held on Friday, April 25.

Terang Returned and Services League (RSL) sub-branch president Dianne Meade said a large crowd was anticipated each year, with the community showing enthusiasm for paying its respects on the day.

“None of us would be here today without those who had served their nation,” she said.

“We’ve got a great following here at Terang.

“It goes to show what a good community we have which supports its returned and service league veterans, and those who served in all wars.

“People always show their support, which I think is a great thing for our community.”

Mrs Meade said there would be the usual full schedule in Terang this year, with Anzac Day starting at the Terang RSL Hall with a morning service from 5.45am.

“We’ve got something very special planned for the dawn service with a surprise speaker,” she said.

“We’re looking forward to that, and afterwards we’ll be having a gunfire breakfast put on by the Rotary Club with bacon and egg rolls.

“At 10am we’ll have a normal service at the Terang RSL Hall, after which we’ll gather outside and march down to the monument at 11am.

“Everyone is welcome to come back to the hall following the 11am service for a light luncheon, where they can see the wide range of memorabilia we have on display.

“It’ll be good for everyone to have a chat and a wander around – everybody makes themselves at home, and it makes for a great day.”

Mortlake RSL members will be hosting the traditional program starting with a service at Ellerslie in the morning followed by a march and service in Mortlake.

“At 9am we’ll be at the Ellerslie monument for a service there,” Mortlake RSL president Merv Hampson said.

“At 10am we will march off from the old post office (corner of Webster and Dunlop Street) in Mortlake, but this year instead of using the service road we’re going to be marching down the highway.

“We will have a service at the monument following the march, after which we’ll have morning tea at the RSL Hall – with the public invited to join us.”

Mr Hampson said he was pleased to see the march returning to the highway, and hoped to see crowds gather to pay their respects.

“We encourage everyone to come along and support us on the day,” he said.

“Anzac Day is an important day in Australian history.”

Meanwhile in Noorat, a service will be held at 8am at the war memorial on Mackinnons Bridge Road, opposite the Noorat Presbyterian Church.

A march and service will also be held in Panmure from 2pm on Harris Street, opposite the Panmure Hotel.
