Veterans set to tee off Friday, 10 February 2012 10:00
Veteran players Alan Fraser (left) and Jack O’Brien prepare for the Camperdown Golf Club’s inaugural event for more experienced golfers.
CAMPERDOWN Golf Club’s inaugural veterans’ competition will see players 55 and over compete at the club on Monday, February 20.
Event co-ordinator and club secretary Col Keane said planning for the competition began late last year.
“We’ve been preparing for this for a while now,” Mr Keane said.
“The golf course is in reasonably good condition at the moment considering the dry weather, with the greens in particularly good shape,” he said.
Veteran Camperdown golfer Jack O’Brien is the club’s oldest member at 87 years-old.
Mr O’Brien said he had been a member of the Camperdown club for 14 months but had been playing the sport for a lot longer.
“I’ve been playing for about 60 years,” he said.
Past club champion Alan Fraser just made the cut for the veteran’s competition at 58 years of age.
“I’ve been a member of Camperdown for 22 years and I’ve been playing golf since I was 13,” he said.
Mr Keane said visitors from other clubs and non-handicap players were also welcome to play in the event.
