Career choice excites Tuesday, 07 February 2012 10:00
TRAINING to be a GP is a great career move for Camperdown’s latest edition Katherine King.
Now in her sixth straight year of study, Ms King will spend five months with the Robinson Street Medical Clinic followed by five months at the Scott Street Clinic.
“Medicine is a wonderful career choice,” she said.
“I always wanted to do something that had extra value for the community,” she said.
“I wanted to feel like I was contributing to the wider community and society and medicine lets you do that.
“It’s also a career where learning is life-long and that appeals to me as well, since I don’t like to be bored.”
Ms King said medicine also held a huge diversity of career paths, which offered great variety.
Completing a Batchelor of Science at Sydney, Ms King has just completed two years of
medicine at Deakin University in Geelong.
Her third year of training has been provided through Deakin’s IMMERSe program and will see her gain ‘on-the-job’ experience at Camperdown’s two clinics.
Once finished, she will then embark on her final fourth year of study which will see her placed in a hospital environment.
“I’ve wanted to be a GP since I first decided to study medicine,” Ms King said.
“I’m interested in rural practices – you’re able to get to know and understand your patients better.
“I also like the idea of being in a smaller country town and becoming part of the community.”
Ms King said Camperdown was a “really pretty little town with some great features”.
“I’ve already had friends come to stay and they’ve commented on the town’s beauty too.
“Everyone here has been very welcoming and friendly, so I’m looking forward to my year ahead.”
